Height Weight Chart - Babies to Teenagers

The size and weight of children during the first years of life mark the growth to adulthood. Learn to understand the development boards.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has just updated their weight growth charts and created a new benchmark for children between 0 and 5 years of age. This parameter is the result of a multi-ethnic study conducted in Brazil, Ghana, India, Norway, the United States and Oman involving 8440 children.

The new tables provide a global benchmark and are consistent with national and international guidelines on infant feeding, which recommend breastfeeding as the optimal source of nutrition especially in the first year.

"The initiative to change the pattern of growth reference arose because it was demonstrated that infants fed according to WHO recommendations, in terms of exclusive breastfeeding for six months and continuing until the second year, had a different growth trajectory tables of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). In other words, reflecting neither the patterns of nutrition, or ethnic differences, " said Chessa Lutter, an Regional Advisor of the Nutrition Unit of the Pan American Health Organization, in an interview with Portfolio.

The first set of growth charts to be released includes growth indicators such as weight for age, height for age and weight for height. However, the implementation process in the countries will take approximately one year, while the Ministry of Social Protection regulates the use and trains professionals in nutrition, pediatrics, and nursing.

Inches and pounds

The development of height and weight is critical in the early years of life because from this stage are configured further adulthood attributes in size and texture.

It is therefore important to give the child proper environmental factors to promote healthy nutrition and proper growth.

To this end, there are some graphics that calculate and compare growth with respect to a standard range. There are tables for each parameter: weight, height, head circumference and body fat, calculated for girls and boys.

Typically, babies are born weighing between 3,000 and 3,500 grams. If they are below 2,500 grams, they can be considered underweight. If they weight more than 4,000 grams, they have increased risk of obesity. It is important to note that after birth, children lose a little weight and gain it again quickly after the third week.

The rate of development up to 4 years is breathtaking. This period is when most humans grow most throughout life.  The first year especially, babies double their weight and height. For example, you can go from three to 10 pounds and from 50 to 75 centimeters.

After the first birthday of the babies, their growth becomes slower. Usually they only gain one or two pounds per year and their height increases between 5 and 10 centimeters.
Given the mean development that occurs in the first year, some parents worry that their child is not growing at the rate as before. However, this is normal if it stays within the same curve as the growth charts.
